dkzody,
It's a great thing to be able to play around with teaching and life, especially in the world of student journalism. I'm fairly structured to begin with, so beta means something different to me probably than to others. But I love the idea of being "allowed" to fail (or even expected).

I too thrive in experimental mode. I keep my planning so open that I can take advantage of opportunities that show up on my doorstep, like planning a big event for the city, or taking my kids to a competition at the university.

Hi Ray,
You are right that these things have been important for decades; I think Pink's argument is that they are becoming ever more acknowledged as critical to successful sales, marketing, work, enjoyment. The "right brain" skills are moving into focus and the left-brain skills are taking a back seat for a while. I just heard a report on NPR this afternoon about mechanical engineers losing their jobs in this recession due to outsourcing. It's one thing for data entry/phone jobs to be outsourced, it's another when a young guy with a masters in engineering from Stanford is told he can either move to India to work for the company at 1/2 pay or just leave.

Good point, though, about the tools for creativity ushering in the products which usher in the trends which usher in the NEED/DESIRE for more of same.

I agree the principals of story-telling, play, design, etc are important. But they've been important for decades, not just recently.

I wasn't a fan of Pink's book at all. A better argument would have been that the tools for creativity (video cameras, YouTube, PowerPoint) are now more ubiquitous, and just as the printing press ushered in the Information Age, electronic creativity tools usher in the Conceptual Age.

But outsourcing and automation doesn't "just" leave the creative work left to do. There's plenty of left-brain work left too.
